San Antonio Local Guide

8 Best Day Trips from San Antonio

One of the underrated perks of living in San Antonio: within an hour or two, you're in Hill Country wine country, on a Texas river, or eating some of the best BBQ in the state. Here are the day trips I actually send clients on — whether they're visiting, relocating, or just looking for a Saturday escape.

Fredericksburg

~1 hr 15 min northwest

The heart of Texas Hill Country wine country — Main Street's German bakeries and biergartens, Wildseed Farms in spring, and 50+ tasting rooms along US-290. Plan a late lunch at Otto's, then sunset on Enchanted Rock just up the road.

Best for
Wine lovers, couples, anniversary trips

Don't miss

  • US-290 Wine Road tasting passport
  • Enchanted Rock State Natural Area at sunset
  • National Museum of the Pacific War

New Braunfels & Gruene

~35 min northeast on I-35

Schlitterbahn in summer, tubing the Comal or Guadalupe most of the year, and two-stepping at the oldest dance hall in Texas. Historic Gruene feels like its own small town inside New Braunfels, with smoked brisket at the Gristmill and live music nightly.

Best for
Families, tubers, live-music fans

Don't miss

  • Tubing the Comal (shorter, calmer than the Guadalupe)
  • Gruene Hall — Texas's oldest continuously running dance hall
  • Naegelin's Bakery, the oldest in Texas

Boerne

~30 min northwest on I-10

An easy Hill Country escape that doubles as a great relocation tour — antiquing on Main Street, kayaking the Cibolo, and Cave Without a Name nearby. Many of my clients fall in love with Boerne on a day trip and end up house-hunting in Fair Oaks Ranch.

Best for
Antiquers, families, future Hill Country buyers

Don't miss

  • Hauptstrasse shops and Cypress Bend Park
  • Cibolo Center for Conservation trails
  • Cave Without a Name guided tour

Wimberley

~1 hr 15 min north

Tiny Hill Country town built around the Blanco River and Cypress Creek. Float Blue Hole in summer, browse Wimberley Market Days (first Saturday, March–December), and grab pie at the Leaning Pear on the square.

Best for
Slow weekends, swimming holes, art lovers

Don't miss

  • Jacob's Well Natural Area (reserve a swim slot ahead)
  • Blue Hole Regional Park
  • Wimberley Glass Works hot-glass blowing demos

Bandera

~50 min northwest

The self-proclaimed Cowboy Capital of the World — working dude ranches, honky-tonks on Main Street, and trail rides into the Hill Country. Hit the Old Spanish Trail Café for chicken-fried steak, then ride at Mayan Dude Ranch.

Best for
Families with kids, horse lovers, true-Texas itineraries

Don't miss

  • 11th Street Cowboy Bar
  • Hill Country State Natural Area trails
  • Frontier Times Museum

Comfort & Sisterdale

~1 hr northwest

Quieter, less-touristed Hill Country between Boerne and Fredericksburg — historic limestone buildings, Sister Creek Vineyards, and the High's Café & Store. A great alternative when Fredericksburg is packed on a Saturday.

Best for
Wine tasting without the crowds, history buffs

Don't miss

  • Sister Creek Vineyards
  • Comfort's historic district (a National Register district)
  • Welfare Café for a long Sunday lunch

Lockhart — BBQ Capital of Texas

~1 hr northeast

Four legendary smokehouses in one small town. Hit Kreuz Market and Smitty's the same trip — they're worth the comparison — and walk the Caldwell County Courthouse square in between bites.

Best for
BBQ pilgrimages, food-focused day trips

Don't miss

  • Kreuz Market
  • Smitty's Market
  • Black's BBQ
  • Chisholm Trail BBQ

Port Aransas

~2 hr 30 min southeast

The closest real beach day from San Antonio. Drive on the sand at Mustang Island, eat fresh shrimp on the boardwalk, and catch the ferry from Aransas Pass. Doable as a long day trip; better as an overnight.

Best for
Beach days, families, weekend overnights

Don't miss

  • Mustang Island State Park
  • Port A Beach (drive-on access)
  • Virginia's on the Bay for sunset

Thinking about a Hill Country move?

A lot of my clients fall in love with Boerne, Fredericksburg, or Wimberley on a day trip and start house-hunting six months later. If that's you, I'd love to help you map out neighborhoods, schools, and what your budget actually buys out there.
